itself is a huge change for the nervous system to adjust to and then
if you add invasive procedures due to birth complications it can be a
very shocking experience for the baby to integrate. The prevailing
attitude about this is that the baby doesn't have the awareness to
remember these events and it is soon forgotten. In light of current
understanding the early traumas are stored in that data base in the
tissue, brain, and nervous system and are awakened when resembling
experiences occur later in life. Example: a premature baby is quite
often put in an isolate and many invasi ve procedures are necessary
for saving its life. Because it is alone and without the mother for
an extended period of time it actually bonds with isolation. As an
adult when under stress these people often seek isolation as a
reference point of safety for that is what they are familiar with. We are creatures of habit. We find security in the known established pathways of experience. What does a baby need most when arriving in this world? Besides the breast, Joseph Chilton Pearce, author of The Magical Child and many other books says the baby needs a pair of human eyes to gaze into for it will turn on the whole brain and nothing else will. Their eyes are developed enough to see 6-12 inches away from themselves and if you put a baby to the breast it is just about that distance. Baby can receive nuturing from breastfeeding as well as looking into the mother's eyes for orientation. Another critical element that gives th e baby positive orientation is the sound of the mother's or fathers heartbeat. Babies who don't get these things have a much harder time adjusting to the world they have just arrived in and can go into fight or flight. They need continued contact with their parents to feel secure. In our culture we have many problems with attachment disorder. That condition can occur when the bonding process is interrupted. A very successful antidote for this condition is infant massage for in that process if the parent delivers the massage several times a week it fosters bonding and attachment. Bonding happens through the senses and infant massage activates the senses for both the mother and the baby. Of course loving parents can off set a lot of early trauma. Sadly non-bonded babies can become the most violent adults. Bonding is critical for it assists in the development of a conscious and the awareness of self and others. In studies done on serial killers it has been found that the base line for the behavior they display is ruptured bonding through out life. All of the early formation experiences are held in the cellular data base being referred to in this article. When a person comes to resembling experiences later in life they will automatically refer to the original response stored in he cells, nervous system and brain because it is the known established pathway. This process happens through the unconscious and is almost impossible to prevent. The way to free oneself of habitual responses that can also be called imprints is to choose to respond differently to those stimulus that set off habitual patterns in ones character. Tribal people from many parts of the world have this understanding but do not have science to back up their nowledge therefore their insight has been given little credence or seen as primitive and not modern. The film Cellu lar Echoes, Environmental Influences in the Journey From the Womb to the World, is a cross cultural exploration of both science and tribal birth wisdom. The tribal people have the rituals to acommodate what science can now validate. Their birthing practices are full of respect for the newly forming human within. Example: In the Dagara Tribe of W. Africa when a couple is trying to conceive a baby a welcoming ritchual is done to attract a soul to the family. During that ritual the entire tribe commits to raising the child so the parents don't have to feel alone in the process. Then the community builds an alter to the child and people bring gifts for placement on that alter to welome the child into their tribe. During the pregnancy a listening ritual is done and the grandparents ask the
ancestors on the other side to give them the name and life purpose of
the child. When the mother is doing the physical birth with the
women th e father is doing the spiritual birth with the men. When the
baby comes out the children are singing to the baby to greet it into
this world. The author of this article and producer of the above mentioned film, DeAnna Elliott. has been certifying practioners in the art of infant massage for the past 25 years. Through working with thousands of infants and their families using the vehicle of touch she learned that infants have tremendous awareness that is not recognized. She also conducted a private therapeutic massage practice during that time and learned about cell memory. The goal with the film is to increase cultural sensitivity to the formations stages of human development along with bridging understanding of many cultures and disciplines to bring unification to our shared condition as the human race.
